A

You have probably never heard of Amy Winterbourne, but she is a most unusual woman. She lives in a house that she built herself out of trash. Well, the stuff used to be called trash, but now it’s called “recycled” material. The windows and doors came from old buildings around the town that were being pulled down. The walls are made from old glass bottles that are glued together. The roof is made from discarded tiles. And the fence is built out of used soda cans. Amy recently won an award from the Help Save Our Planet Society. The president Jackson Smith said, “Amy is an inspiration to us all.”

And what does Amy do in her spare time She makes model toys out of old TVs and sells them to raise money for the Children’s Hospital.

Make an interview: ask students to read the article again and interview Amy Winterbourne. Think about five questions they are going to ask her.

Activity 2:

Present two pictures. Ask students to make a short report using the phrases “be made from” and “used to be”. Choose the representatives to share.

Teaching aims

(1) Students can memorize words and phrases like “ride, village, bridge, ropeway and come true”.

(2) Students can describe how they come to school every day.

(3) Students can appreciate that they can come to school in such convenient ways.

Student can grasp the new words and phrases in this class.

Teaching difficult point

Students can describe different transportation tools.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Pre - reading

(1) Show different kinds of transportation tools on PPT and ask students to choose in which way they come to school.

(2) Show the picture in the text on PPT and let students talk about what they could get from the picture.

(3) Explain new words and phrases.

Step 2 While - reading

(1) Fast reading

Ask students to read the passage quickly and invite some volunteers to summarize or report the main idea of the passage.

(2) Careful reading

Ask students to read the passage again with the 4 questions below. Let them discuss in groups, and then ask each group to give their answers and explanation.

How do the students in the village go to school?

Why do they go to school like this?

Does the boy like his school? Why?

What is the villagers’ dream? Do you think their dream can come true? Why or why not?

Step 3 Post - reading

(1) Finish the task in part 2c.

(2) Divide the students into several groups and ask them to make a conversation which includes the main ideas in this class and their post - reading feelings.

Step 4 Summery and homework

(1) Give them five minutes to think about the knowledge what they have learned in this lesson.

(2) Make sentences by using new words and key sentence structures.

(3) Write an essay about this passage.
